Intertextuality and photojournalism – MSc Thesis

Intertextuality and photojournalism
Semiotic-driven analysis of images used for covering news
MSc thesis – Politecnico di Milano, Italy

The goal of my thesis is to highlight visual patterns in photojournalism. The study covers photographies of crimes, natural disasters and other events such as 9/11. The thesis is organised on three stages. For the first stage, I researched, analysed and compared several case studies from the past. In the second stage, I focused on one event: the Costa Concordia shipwreck analysing the recurring images used for covering the news. The final stages brought me to define six visual types used for covering the news.
