ABSENT DATA

Why Gaps, Uncertainty, and Invisible Data Matter

A forthcoming book by Tiziana Alocci, published by Wiley in 2027.

We tend to think of data as a record of what is known. But what about what is missing?

Absent Data explores the gaps, silences and uncertainties hidden inside the datasets we use to understand the world. From information that was never collected to data that has been neglected, erased, obscured or made impossible to measure, the book reveals how absence can shape knowledge just as powerfully as presence.

Bringing together data visualisation, art, science, music, technology and social research, Absent Data offers new ways to recognise what conventional charts and datasets leave out and asks how we might represent absence without turning uncertainty into false certainty.
