The words used to cover the Crimean War through 19th-century newspapers. Words played an essential role in establishing the new role of the special correspondent during the war. Although early reports contained rich and detailed narratives, it would often take weeks before reliable information arrived back in Britain.

The artwork visualizes the top 50 words mentioned each year from a selection of British newspapers from the 1800 century colour-coded by category.

Part of the “Visualising Victorian News” exhibition at British Library (London), 2022.
